The difficulties that airline operator Comair is currently facing have brought into sharp focus the challenges faced by the broader local airline industry.

The low-cost airline sector grew robustly in the past 15 years, encroaching on the local market share of traditional carriers like South African Airways.

But being a highly competitive terrain, a number of low-cost carriers have come and gone, with now very few managing to hold their ground.
